Where it all began

In October of 1997, Carlos de Abreu and Janice Pennington organized the first Hollywood Film Awards®. Created to honor excellence in filmmaking, the HFAs has become the Official Launch of the Award Season™.

Kirk Douglas: Lifetime Achievement Award

The 1st Annual Hollywood Film Awards® honored Kirk Douglas with the first Hollywood Lifetime Achievement Award. Douglas came to silver screen stardom during the Golden Age of Hollywood in films like "Ace In the Hole", "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea" and "Paths of Glory".

 

Graham Nash: Visionary Award

The second award of the night was the Hollywood Visionary Ward, given to photographer and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame-inductee, Graham Nash.

Action! Cut! And that's a wrap!

Norman Jewison (right) was the first recipient of the Hollywood Outstanding Achievement in Directing Award. The Canadian director's films, such as "In the Heat of the Night", "Fiddler on the Roof" and "Moonstruck", have earned multiple Academy Awards. Producers Shine

Richard D. Zanuck and David Brown were both awarded the Hollywood Outstanding Achievement in Producing Award in its first year. Zanuck won the Academy Award for Best Picture with 1989's "Driving Miss Daisy". A long-time partner of Zanuck's, Brown has produced both films and Broadway musicals.

 

Music to our ears

Music made it's HFA debut in 1998. Musician Stewart Copeland, (second from left) received the Hollywood Outstanding Achievement in Music in Film Visionary Award. Music writer Dave Grusin (far right) took home the Hollywood Outstanding Achievement in Music in Film Award.

Growing up

The Third Annual Hollywood Film Awards® introduced six new categories: Casting, Editing, Community Service, Actor and Actress of the Year and the Outstanding Achievement in Acting Award.

Achievement in acting

The Hollywood Outstanding Achievement in Acting Award was established to honor not only an actor's storied career, but the quality of his or her work. Morgan Freeman takes to the stage to accept his HFA.

 

Production Design & Songwriter Awards Added

The 4th Annual Hollywood Film Awards® added two new awards to its roster: Hollywood Outstanding Achievement in Production Design, won by Henry Bumstead (top) and Hollywood Outstanding Achievement in Songwriting, won by Kenny Loggins (bottom).

Jack Valenti was awarded the first Hollywood Leadership Award by Arnold Schwarzenegger. While president of the Motion Picture Association of America, Valenti was responsible for creating the MPAA film rating system.

Hollywood icon Tom Hanks took home the night's Actor of the Year award.

Jodie Foster became the first actress to win the Hollywood Outstanding Achievement in Acting award.

Alison Lohman and Geoffrey Rush became the first Supporting Actress and Actor of the Year at the Hollywood Film Awards®.

 

HFA family continues to grow

In addition to now honoring supporting acting roles, The 7th Annual Hollywood Film Awards® added three new categories: Achievement in Film Preservation, Animation and Visual Effects. They were awarded to Roger L. Mayer, Andrew Stanton and John Gaeta, respectively.
