Hollywood Outstanding Achievement in Community Service AwardTM Recipient
4th Annual Hollywood Film Festival®, August 2-7, 2000
ALBERT SWEET
An executive, an entrepreneur, and a community-minded philanthropist, Albert Sweet has always believed in improving neighborhoods by acquiring older buildings and restoring them with high-quality improvements. He has done this for 37 years without ever availing himself of any government subsidies or grants.
He also believes in "giving back" to the community, and under the auspices of The Albert and Janey Sweet Philanthropic Fund, he has sponsored numerous charitable and civic benefits including the American Cinematheque, Children of the Night, Covenant House California, Hollywood Entertainment Museum, Hollywood Police Support Association, and The Los Angeles Free Clinic among many others.
From his boyhood roots in New York to a vision of "glitz and glamour" in Hollywood, Albert Sweet followed his dream and acquired his first commercial property in Hollywood in 1963. Since then, Albert Sweet Development has acquired more than three dozen commercial properties in and around the Hollywood area, which are comprised of twelve sound stages and more than a quarter million square feet of quality, creative, production offices and editorial spaces.
Under the auspices of his wholly-owned subsidiary, Occidental Studios, in 1989 Mr. Sweet acquired the flagship of his operations, one of Hollywood's oldest continuously operating studios, which were formerly owned by such well-known icons as Mary Pickford, Cecil B. DeMille, and Robert Aldrich. Mr. Sweet commenced with a massive upgrading program in 1990, by restoring each of the stages and bungalows to its original luster. Occidental has since been home to countless independent filmmakers involved in feature films, television series, commercials, music videos, and utility projects. Occidental has also been home for many projects produced by major studios including Paramount, Disney, Universal, New Line, MGM, and others.
Mr. Sweet and his wife Janey have four grown children and five grandchildren, ranging in age from 17 years to 14 months.
