7th Annual Hollywood Film Festival® October 15-20, 2003
Hollywood Outstanding Achievement in Producing Award Honoree
Sydney Pollack
As a producer, Sydney Pollack has worked with many talented directors, including himself. That collaboration earned him both the Best Picture and the Best Director Oscars® in 1986 for Out of Africa, starring Robert Redford and Meryl Streep. He was also nominated for Best Picture and Best Director Academy Awards in 1983 for Tootsie, which starred Dustin Hoffman and Jessica Lange, and received a Best Director nomination in 1970 for They Shoot Horses, Donšt They?
Mr. Pollack's work as a producer is a showcase of a wide variety of successful, popular, and highly regarded films. In the 1970s and early 1980s he produced Jeremiah Johnson, starring Robert Redford, The Yakuza, starring Robert Mitchum, Three Days of the Condor, starring Robert Redford and Faye Dunaway, Bobby Deerfield, starring Al Pacino, and Absence of Malice, starring Paul Newman and Sally Field, all of which he directed. During that period, he also produced Honeysuckle Rose, directed by Jerry Schatzberg, and Alan Rudolph's Songwriter.
In 1985, Mr. Pollack formed Mirage Productions. Under that banner he has produced Alan J. Pakula's Presumed Innocent, starring Harrison Ford, Steven Kloves's The Fabulous Baker Boys, Luis Mandoki's White Palace, starring Susan Sarandon and James Spader, David S. Ward's Major League, Kenneth Branagh's Dead Again, Steve Zaillian's Searching for Bobby Fischer, Ang Lee's Sense and Sensibility, Anthony Minghella's The Talented Mr. Ripley, starring Matt Damon, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Jude Law, and Anthony Minghella's Cold Mountain, starring Nicole Kidman, Jude Law, and Renee Zellweger, which is scheduled for release this Christmas. (In 2000, Anthony Minghella became a partner in Mirage Productions.)
Some of the other films Mr. Pollack has produced over the past fifteen years include Random Hearts, Havana, Sabrina, and The Firm, all of which he directed, Sliding Doors, directed by Peter Howitt, Leaving Normal, directed by Ed Zwick, Flesh and Bone, directed by Steven Kloves, and Bright Lights, Big City, directed by James Bridges.
Sydney Pollack is a founding member of the Sundance Institute, the Chairman Emeritus of the American Cinematheque, a sustaining founder of the Film Foundation of the Directors Guild of America, and a member of the board of directors for the Motion Picture and Television Fund Foundation.
