HOLLYWOOD MOVIE, ACTOR & ACTRESS
OF THE YEAR AWARDS TO BE PRESENTED DURING
THE 5TH ANNUAL HOLLYWOOD FILM FESTIVAL
Hollywood, CA -- June 18, 2001 -- The Hollywood Film Festival®, celebrating its fifth anniversary, today unveiled its plans for this year's "Hollywood Movie of the Year," "Hollywood Actor of the Year," and "Hollywood Actress of the Year" awards.
A Blue Ribbon committee of established Hollywood professionals will select 6 award nominees in each category, and the winners will be chosen by the public at voting polls in over 1,800 Hollywood Video stores across the United States, and online at Entertainment Tonight's website ETOnline.com and Variety.com. The voting starts July 1 and the winners will be receiving their award at the "Hollywood Movie Awards Gala Ceremony" on August 6, at the Beverly Hilton Hotel.
Last year's winners were Angelina Jolie and Russell Crowe, who accepted their awards at the Festival's gala closing night "Hollywood Movie Awards" dinner in the International Ballroom of the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills.
The "Hollywood Movie Awards" will also bestow the "Hollywood Breakthrough Male Performance Award," and the "Hollywood Breakthrough Female Performance Award," on an up-and-coming actor and actress, the "Hollywood Outstanding Achievement Awards" on Hollywood stars and professionals - recognizing Lifetime, Acting, Producing, Directing, Editing, Screenwriting, Music-in-Film, Cinematography, Production Design and Casting Director achievement, and the "Hollywood Discovery Awards" on independent filmmakers - recognizing the festival's Best Feature, Best Documentary and Best Short.
This year's Festival will take place from August 1 to 6, and it will showcase a selection of soon-to-be-announced prestigious domestic and international feature films, shorts, documentaries, and animation. The venues include the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel for the Hollywood Film Conference, Paramount and Raleigh Studios for the Hollywood Film Screenings and the Beverly Hilton Hotel for the "Hollywood Movie Awards."
Founder Carlos de Abreu stated that "Hollywood has been the one standard, the absolute leader in filmmaking, and we created this Festival in order to bridge the gap between established Hollywood and filmmakers from the global creative community. The Hollywood Film Festival is fast becoming an integral part of the effort to restore the Hollywood corridor to what it once was, and it is the only film festival that bears the Hollywood name and physically takes place in Hollywood. It is the only "indigenous" film festival. Our success stories include independent filmmakers selling their films to distribution outlets such as HBO, Miramax, Showtime, Seventh Art Releasing and Starz among others, as well as securing directing jobs with major studios. That's what we are all about: providing direct access to the real Hollywood pros, so that talented filmmakers can be discovered. We are the discovery festival."
Last year's Festival was a resounding success with an attendance of over 15,000 people, reflecting a 50% increase from the prior year, and more than 1,000 films were submitted. Over 100 industry professionals participated as panelists and guests in the Hollywood Film Conference, and thousands of attendees enjoyed the screenings, conference and Gala Ceremony.
Over 900 guests attended the Opening Night Party that took place at the trendy Sunset Room. The following day, more than 550 people attended the Screening Premiere Party at the Paramount Theater. And finally, on August 7, 2000, the "Hollywood Movie Awards" Gala Ceremony was held before an audience of over 1,200 Hollywood Film Festival attendees at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills. Special honors went to Angelina Jolie and Russell Crowe - Hollywood Actress and Actor of the Year Awards - legendary actors Richard Dreyfuss and Morgan Freeman for their contributions to the art of film, and to such acclaimed filmmakers as Richard Donner, Jonathan Krane, Mace Neufeld, Thelma Schoonmaker, Michael Kamen, Henry Bumstead, songwriter Kenny Loggins and casting director Mike Fenton.
The Hollywood Movie Awards Gala Ceremony was truly an extraordinary Hollywood evening. Celebrities and Hollywood notables who attended the Gala included Robert Altman, Anne Archer, Halle Berry, Jeff Bridges, Francis Ford Coppola, Lauren Shuler Donner, Hector Elizondo, Frances Fisher, Melora Hardyn, Arthur Hiller, Jeffrey Katzenberg, Arnold Kopelson, Earl Lestz, Ray Liotta, Michael Mann, Kelly Preston, Lynn Redgrave, Bob Shaye, Gene Simmons, John Travolta, and James Woods among many others. Attendees were treated to the music of Johnny Crawford and his twelve-piece orchestra and the hostess was Access Hollywood's Nancy O'Dell.
