"CURSE TO CLOSE H'W'D FEST
U.S. preem of 'Girl From Rio' kicks off event
Woody Allen's "The Curse of the Jade Scorpion" will close the fifth Hollywood Film Festival, which unspools Aug. 2-6.
Kicking off the festivities will be the U.S. preem of Christopher Monger's feature "Girl From Rio," toplining Hugh Laurie, Santiago Segura and Vanessa Nunes.
Forty-two films -- drawn from 1,500 submissions -- are skedded to screen during the five-day fest, including 11 world and 18 U.S. preems.
"This year's lineup represents an excellent cross-section of independent cinema from around the world," fest founder and exec director Carlos De Abreu said.
Pics include Greek comedy "My Best Friend," by Lakis Lazopoulos and Giorgos Lanthimos; the L.A. preem of "An American Rhapsody," co-starring Nastassja Kinski and Tony Goldwyn; the world preem of "The Wicksboro Incident"; "The Zookeeper," with Sam Neill; "Mother Viper," featuring Harvey Keitel; and "Pendulum," starring Rachel Hunter.
Fest also will feature the Hollywood Film Conference at the Roosevelt Hotel. Several dozen top Hollywood execs have confirmed their participation in the confab.
Other events and screenings will take place at Paramount Studios and Raleigh Studios.
Kudos parade
Fest will culminate with the Hollywood Movie Awards ceremony Aug. 6 at the BevHilton.
The final evening's highlights will include award presentations to Nobel Peace Prize winner Jose Ramos-Jorta (humanitarian nod), Paul Walker (breakthrough actor), Shannon Elizabeth (breakthrough actress), John Frankenheimer (directing), Edward Feldman (producing), Laszlo Kovacs (cinematography), Tom Rolf (editing), Hans Zimmer (music), Diane Warren (songwriting), Robert Boyle (production design) and David Rubin (casting).
The winners of the movie, actor and actress awards -- selected by the public voting online at Variety.com and ETOnline.com and at Hollywood Video stores -- will be announced that evening.
Gala award presenters and guests include Michael Apted, James L. Brooks, Sandra Bullock, Harrison Ford, Sally Kellerman, Penny Marshall, Anthony Minghella, Sydney Pollack, Ridley Scott, Tony Scott and Charlize Theron.
