JEFFREY KATZENBERG TO RECEIVE HOLLYWOOD ANIMATION AWARD
HOLLYWOOD FILM FESTIVAL ESTABLISHES
THE TEX AVERY ANIMATION AWARD
DreamWorks' Jeffrey Katzenberg To Be The First Recipient of the Award At The Festival's Hollywood Movie Awards Gala Ceremony
Hollywood, CA -- September 12, 2002 -- The Hollywood Film Festival will present its first-ever "Tex Avery Animation Award" at the 2002 Festival, to be held in October. Named for legendary animator Tex Avery, the award will be presented annually to honor an individual or group who have nurtured and advanced the art form of animation through outstanding contributions in the creative and/or technical arenas.
When told of the award being given in her late father's name, Tex Avery's daughter Nancy commented, "I am so thrilled that the Hollywood Film Festival has chosen to pay tribute to my father's legacy with this award. I know he would have considered this a great honor and would have been as deeply touched as I am."
The Hollywood Film Festival's Advisory Board also announced that it has selected DreamWorks' Jeffrey Katzenberg to be the first recipient of the award, citing his long-standing commitment to the genre.
Hollywood Film Festival founder and executive director Carlos de Abreu stated, "We are proud to honor Jeffrey Katzenberg with the Hollywood Film Festival's inaugural Tex Avery Animation Award. Jeffrey's well-known passion for animation is almost unparalleled in the film industry. As a studio executive, as a producer and as an unabashed fan, he has made invaluable contributions to the art form on every level, as recently evidenced in this year's Oscar(R) winner "Shrek." We can think of no one more deserving of this award."
The Tex Avery Animation Award will be presented to Mr. Katzenberg during a gala black-tie ceremony, to be held on Monday, October 7, at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills.
TEX AVERY was a pioneer in the field of animation, beginning in the mid-1930s when he was involved in the creation and development of such beloved animated characters as Porky Pig, Daffy Duck and Bugs Bunny. During the 1940s, Avery created some of the most popular cartoons of the day, and introduced such memorable characters as his own Droopy Dog, Screwy Squirrel, and the lecherous Wolf pursuing a decidedly sexy Red Hot Riding Hood. Later in his career, Avery turned his talents to commercials, creating the classic Frito Bandito and the Raid bugs. He also worked for 10 years at Hanna-Barbera, where he worked on such classic cartoons as "The Flintstones." Many of his contemporaries, as well as animators who came after him, have imitated Avery's distinct style, which is still being seen in today's cartoons and animated features.
JEFFREY KATZENBERG, a principal partner in DreamWorks SKG, served as a producer on DreamWorks' computer animated blockbuster "Shrek," which won numerous awards, culminating with the first-ever Academy Award(R) for Best Animated Feature. "Shrek" was also one of the top-grossing films of 2001 and the second highest grossing animated film of all time. Katzenberg was more recently a producer on the traditionally animated musical "Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron." He previously served as an executive producer on the clay animated feature "Chicken Run"; the traditionally animated epic "The Prince of Egypt," which won an Oscar(R) for Best Original Song ("When You Believe"); and on "The Road to El Dorado." Mr. Katzenberg had earlier been Chairman of Walt Disney Studios and helped spearhead the studio's animation renaissance, encompassing such films as "The Lion King," "Beauty and the Beast," "Aladdin" and "The Little Mermaid."
Other festival honorees include MPAA president Jack Valenti, actresses Jodie Foster and Naomi Watts, directors Martin Scorsese and McG, screenwriter Robert Towne, producers Douglas Wick and Lucy Fisher, cinematographer Janusz Kaminski, editor Pietro Scalia, composer Marc Shaiman, songwriter Carole Bayer Sager, production designer Harold Michelson and casting director Marcia Ross.
