'Ring,' 'Narc' set as bookends for H'wood film fest
Gore Verbinski's "The Ring," a remake of a Japanese film from DreamWorks Pictures starring Naomi Watts and Martin Henderson, will kick off the sixth annual Hollywood Film Festival on Oct. 2.
Also included in the fest screenings -- which run through Oct. 6 at the ArcLight Cinemas in Hollywood -- is Joe Carnahan's closing-night film, "Narc," from Paramount Pictures, and the centerpiece premiere, "My Wife Maurice," directed by Jean-Marie Poire.
"Ring," which will screen at the Grove in Los Angeles, centers on a video that brings death to those who watch it one week after viewing it. "Narc," starring Jason Patric and Ray Liotta, tells the dark story of a suspended undercover narcotics officer who is reluctantly drawn back onto the force to find the truth behind the murder of a young cop. "Maurice," starring Alice Evans, Gotz Otto, Philippe Chevallier and Regis Laspales, is described as a French romantic comedy about mistaken identities.
Founder and fest executive director Carlos de Abreu said he's proud of the roster that organizers have selected and the international flair exhibited by the schedule. "I'm very proud of the films; I think we have great work this year on both the features side and the documentary selections," he said. "This year's lineup will present an excellent cross section of independent cinema from Europe and around the world."
Other highlights of the festival include a Hollywood Film Conference at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel, the Hollywood Humanitarian Symposium and screenings of such films as Daniel Sekulich's documentary "Aftermath: The Remnants of War," Oliver Rihs' "Brombeerchen," Frank Van Passel's "Villa Des Roses," Lenka Hellstedt's "Me & Morrison," Alan Jacobs' "American Gun," Ate de Jong's "Fogbound," Rolf Schrader's "Hungry Hearts," Bob Gale's "Interstate 60," Stephen Norrington's "The Last Minute," Francois Velle's "New Suit," Harris Goldberg's "Where's Angelo" and "100 Mile Rule," directed by Brent Huff and starring Maria Bello and Jake Weber.
The fest wraps Oct. 7 with the Hollywood Movie Awards gala ceremony at the Beverly Hilton, where honorees include Jack Valenti, Jodie Foster, Nobel Peace Prize laureate Jody Williams, Martin Scorsese, Jeffrey Katzenberg, Watts and director McG.
