Hollywood film fest adds Euro focus

The Hollywood Film Festival has allied with the European Union Commission to promote European film at the annual event. As part of the partnership, the sixth annual festival in October will introduce a European Film Showcase and a Hollywood European Film Award.

"It is ... one of our permanent endeavors to provide an American audience with quality feature and documentary films from the European Union, America's biggest and most valuable partner in the world," said Willy Helin, director of the press and public affairs delegation of the European Commission in Washington. "It certainly remains an uphill battle to achieve this goal. ... The Hollywood Film Festival, therefore, is an extraordinary platform we are proud to be part of."

Added festival founder Carlos de Abreu: "More than ever, we are committed to assisting talented filmmakers from the global creative community to access established Hollywood. We are honored to have the support of the European Union and its 15 members so that we can recognize the great cultural contribution of Europe to the past, present and future of cinema."

The announcement furthers the festival's already global focus. In April, organizers announced a high-profile Hollywood Humanitarian Council that includes industry notables and local and international political figures. The festival's winning documentaries frequently have centered on international human rights issues.
