Hollywood Fest Honors MARTIN SCORSESE As Well As ROBERT TOWNE, LUCY FISHER, DOUGLAS WICK, JANUSZ KAMINSKI And MARC SHAIMAN With The 'Hollywood Outstanding Achievement Awards'
Five-time Academy Award-Nominated Director MARTIN SCORSESE, Oscar®-Winning Screenwriter ROBERT TOWNE, Academy Award-Winning Producer DOUGLAS WICK, Renowned Producer and Former Studio Executive LUCY FISHER, Two-Time Oscar®-Winning Cinematographer JANUSZ KAMINSKI, and Five-Time Academy Award-Nominated Composer MARC SHAIMAN Will Be Honored by the Hollywood Film Festival at the Hollywood Movie Awards Gala Ceremony.
Hollywood, CA -- July 9, 2002 -- The Hollywood Film Festival has announced that distinguished director Martin Scorsese, a five-time Oscar® nominee, will be honored with the festival's "Hollywood Outstanding Achievement in Directing Award," Academy Award-winning producer Douglas Wick and his producing partner, Lucy Fisher, will receive the "Hollywood Outstanding Achievement in Producing Award," Oscar®-winning writer Robert Towne will be honored with the "Hollywood Outstanding Achievement in Screenwriting Award," two-time Oscar®-winning cinematographer Janusz Kaminski will receive the "Hollywood Outstanding Achievement in Cinematography Award," and five-time Oscar®-nominated composer Marc Shaiman will be honored with the "Hollywood Outstanding Achievement in Music-in-Film Award."
The "Hollywood Outstanding Achievement Awards" will be bestowed upon the honorees as part of the Hollywood Movie Awards Gala Ceremony on Monday evening, October 7, at the Beverly Hilton Hotel.
The announcement was made today by Carlos de Abreu, Founder and Executive Director of the Hollywood Film Festival. Said Mr. de Abreu, "Mr. Scorsese, Mr. Wick, Ms. Fisher, Mr. Towne, Mr. Kaminski, and Mr. Shaiman have demonstrated extraordinary ability throughout their careers. They are excellent examples of highly talented professionals whose work and creative vision is to be applauded and honored."
Martin Scorsese's distinguished work has brought him Best Director Oscar® nominations for "GoodFellas," "The Last Temptation of Christ," and "Raging Bull" and Best Writing nominations for "The Age of Innocence" and "GoodFellas." His work as a director includes the upcoming film "Gangs of New York," starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Daniel Day-Lewis, and Cameron Diaz, as well as the motion pictures "Bringing Out the Dead," "Kundun," "Casino," "Cape Fear" (1991), "The Color of Money," "The King of Comedy," "The Last Waltz," "New York, New York," "Taxi Driver," and "Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore." Actor Robert De Niro, who has starred in eight of Mr. Scorsese's films, won the Best Acting Oscar® for "Raging Bull" and received Academy Award nominations for "Cape Fear" and "Taxi Driver." Martin Scorsese's films have also earned Oscars® for actors Paul Newman ("The Color of Money"), Joe Pesci ("GoodFellas"), and Ellen Burstyn ("Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore"), in addition to critical acclaim and many other awards and nominations.
Academy Award-winning producer Douglas Wick and his partner and wife, Lucy Fisher (former Vice Chairman of the Columbia TriStar Motion Picture Group), have had extraordinary and distinguished careers. Douglas Wick received a Best Picture Oscar® for "Gladiator," which received a total of 12 Academy Award nominations, and won 5 Oscars®, including Best Actor for star Russell Crowe. Mr. Wick's film "Working Girl" was also nominated for Best Picture. He and Ms. Fisher have worked together on such motion pictures as the "Stuart Little" films, "Spy Game," "Hollow Man" and "Girl, Interrupted," which earned Angelina Jolie an Oscar®. In her highly regarded career as a studio executive, Lucy Fisher helped to bring many major films to the screen, including "Jerry Maguire," "My Best Friend's Wedding," "Men in Black," "Air Force One," "The Mask of Zorro," and "As Good As It Gets" for Sony, and "The Fugitive," "The Color Purple," "The Bridges of Madison County," "The Witches of Eastwick," and "Empire of the Sun" for Warner Bros.
Screenwriter Robert Towne received the Best Writing Academy Award for his "Chinatown" screenplay and received Oscar® nominations for "The Last Detail," "Shampoo," and "Greystoke: The Legend of Tarzan, Lord of the Apes." His feature film credits also include "Mission Impossible" and "Mission Impossible II," "Without Limits," "Love Affair," "The Firm," "The Two Jakes," "Days of Thunder," and "Tequila Sunrise." One of Hollywood's most respected "script doctors," Mr. Towne has contributed his expertise to such notable films as "Bonnie and Clyde," "The Godfather," and "Marathon Man," among many others.
Cinematographer Janusz Kaminski has worked very closely with director Steven Spielberg and has won two Oscars® for his work on Mr. Spielberg's films "Saving Private Ryan" and "Schindler's List," as well as an Academy Award nomination for "Amistad." He has also served as cinematographer on Steven Spielberg's "Minority Report," "A.I.: Artificial Intelligence," and "The Lost World: Jurassic Park." Some of Mr. Kaminski's other feature films include "Jerry Maguire," "How to Make an American Quilt," "Tall Tale: The Unbelievable Adventures of Pecos Bill," "Little Giants," and "The Adventures of Huck Finn."
Composer Marc Shaiman has received five Academy Award nominations for his work on "South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut," "Patch Adams," "The First Wives Club," "The American President," and "Sleepless in Seattle." His feature film credits also include "A Few Good Men," "Sister Act," "The Addams Family," "City Slickers," "Misery," and "When Harry Met Sally..." among others.
The 2002 Annual Hollywood Film Festival incorporates in its activities the Hollywood Film Conference, Hollywood Humanitarian Symposium, Hollywood Film Screenings, and Hollywood Movie Awards.
Last year's Opening Night Premiere was Paramount Classics' "An American Rhapsody" by Eva Gardos and the Closing Night Premiere was DreamWorks' World Premiere of Woody Allen's "The Curse of the Jade Scorpion." The festival also presented a special screening featuring the "The Diplomat," a documentary by Tom Zubrycki, regarding Dr. Jose Ramos Horta's struggle to secure the independence of his country, East Timor.
The 2001 festival's Hollywood Movie Awards Gala Ceremony was held before an audience of over 1,200 guests at the Beverly Hilton Hotel.
Special honors went to Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregor -- "Hollywood Actress and Actor of the Year Awards" -- and the "Hollywood Breakthrough Awards" to Shannon Elizabeth and Paul Walker. Other Hollywood luminaries who were honored included producer Edward S. Feldman, director John Frankenheimer, cinematographer Laszlo Kovacs, editor Tom Rolf, composer Hans Zimmer, songwriter Diane Warren, art director Robert Boyle and casting director David Rubin.
The Gala was truly an extraordinary Hollywood moment. Celebrities and Hollywood notables who attended the ceremony included U.S. Congressman Xavier Becerra, Steve Beck, Thora Birch, Jacqueline Bisset, James L. Brooks, Sandra Bullock, Erika Christensen, Robert Cohen, Bruce Davison, Cameron Diaz, Shannon Elizabeth, Fionnula Flanagan, Harrison Ford, Robert Forster, Nicole Kidman, Nastassja Kinski, Baz Luhrmann, Penny Marshall, Ewan McGregor, Scott Patterson, Sydney Pollack, Eva Marie Saint, Tony Scott, Charlize Theron, Paul Walker and Robert Wise to name a few.
