KUDOS FOR THOMAS NEWMAN,
JOHN LOGAN, AND ROBERT ROSEN

Honorees to be feted at Hollywood Awards' Gala

HOLLYWOOD, Calif., August 9 -- The Hollywood Film Festival and Hollywood Awards announce the recipients of this year's "Hollywood Composer of the Year Award," "Hollywood Screenwriter of the Year Award," and "Hollywood Film Preservation Award." The honorees will be recognized for their outstanding achievements at the festival's Hollywood Awards Gala Ceremony which will take place on October 18, 2004, at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills.

Six-time Oscar®-nominated film composer Thomas Newman will receive the "Hollywood Composer of the Year Award," and Oscar®-nominated screenwriter John Logan will be presented with the "Hollywood Screenwriter of the Year Award." Both the UCLA School of Theater, Film and Television and Dean Robert Rosen will be honored with the "Hollywood Film Preservation Award" for their outstanding efforts to preserve the legacy of film for future generations.

The announcement was made today by Carlos de Abreu, Founder and Executive Director of the Hollywood Film Festival. Said de Abreu, "Mr. Newman, Mr. Logan and Dean Rosen have very distinguished careers. Their excellent work is to be applauded and honored."

Six-time Academy Award-nominated composer Thomas Newman's body of work has earned the praise of filmmakers ranging from Robert Altman to Gillian Armstrong. Moving effortlessly from drama ("The Shawshank Redemption," "Road to Perdition") to sharp satire ("The Player") to period classics ("Little Women") to animation and fantasy ("Finding Nemo," "Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events"), composer Thomas Newman is building on an amazing family tradition in Hollywood. To date Newman has received six Oscar® nominations for his film work: he was the only double nominee in 1994's Oscar® race receiving two nominations, for both "Little Women" and "The Shawshank Redemption," and he has since received nominations for his scores from "Unstrung Heroes," "American Beauty," "Road to Perdition," and most recently "Finding Nemo." Newman also won an Emmy for "Outstanding Main Title Theme Music" for HBO's award-winning drama "Six Feet Under."

Screenwriter John Logan received an Academy Award nomination for Best Writing for his contribution to "Gladiator," which won the Best Picture Oscar® in 2001. Logan's most recent film is Martin Scorsese's "The Aviator," which stars Leonardo DiCaprio in the role of Howard Hughes and is due for release in December. Logan's other film credits include "The Last Samurai," "Sinbad: Legend of the Seven Seas," "Star Trek: Nemesis," "The Time Machine" and "Any Given Sunday." He also won the WGA Award and received an Emmy nomination for the TV movie "RKO 281."

The UCLA School of Theater, Film and Television and Dean Robert Rosen have contributed great effort and many years of work to film preservation. In 1975, Dean Rosen was appointed the director of the UCLA Film and Television Archive, and since then has worked steadily to help build one of the largest film archives in the world. The Archive's collection, the largest held by an American university, contains over 50,000 films and 27 million feet of newsreel footage. Dean Rosen has also worked with Martin Scorsese and other filmmakers to establish The Film Foundation in its efforts to preserve America's film history, and has served as the chair of its Archivists Council.

The 2004 Annual Hollywood Film Festival® incorporates in its activities the Hollywood Awards, Hollywood Film Conference, Hollywood Film Screenings, Hollywood Documentary Film Festival and Hollywood Horror, Sci-Fi and Fantasy Film Festival.
