HOLLYWOOD FEST ANNOUNCES CRAFT KUDOS WINNERS
Honorees to be feted at Hollywood Film Fest's Gala Ceremony on Monday, October 20, 2003
HOLLYWOOD, Calif., July 15 -- The Hollywood Film Festival® announced this year's selection of honorees who will be recognized for their outstanding achievements at the festival's Hollywood Awards Gala ceremony which will take place on October 20, 2003, at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills.
Distinguished cinematographer John Toll, a two-time Oscar® winner, will be honored with the festival's "Hollywood Outstanding Achievement in Cinematography Award," three-time Academy Award-winning editor Michael Kahn will receive the "Hollywood Outstanding Achievement in Editing Award," Oscar®-winning composer Howard Shore will be honored with the "Hollywood Outstanding Achievement in Music-in-Film Award," three-time Oscar®-nominated songwriter David Foster will receive the "Hollywood Outstanding Achievement in Songwriting Award," Academy Award-winning costume designer Ann Roth will be honored with the "Hollywood Outstanding Achievement in Costume Design Award," three-time Academy Award-nominated production designer William J. Creber will receive the "Hollywood Richard Sylbert Outstanding Achievement in Production Design Award," and casting director Deborah Aquila will be honored with the "Hollywood Outstanding Achievement in Casting Award."
The "Hollywood Outstanding Achievement Awards" will be bestowed upon the honorees as part of the Hollywood Movie Awards Gala Ceremony on Monday evening, October 20, at the Beverly Hilton Hotel.
The announcement was made today by Carlos de Abreu, Founder and Executive Director of the Hollywood Film Festival. Said Mr. de Abreu, "Mr. Toll, Mr. Kahn, Mr. Shore, Mr. Foster, Ms. Roth, Mr. Creber and Ms. Aquila have demonstrated extraordinary ability throughout their careers. They are excellent examples of highly talented professionals whose work and creative vision is to be applauded and honored."
Cinematographer John Toll's acclaimed work has brought him Best Cinematography Oscars® for "Legends of the Fall," directed by Edward Zwick, and "Braveheart," directed by Mel Gibson, as well as an Academy Award nomination for "The Thin Red Line" by director Terrence Malick. His other films include the upcoming Warner Bros. release "The Last Samurai," starring Tom Cruise, Cameron Crowe's "Vanilla Sky" and "Almost Famous," Francis Ford Coppola's "The Rainmaker" and "Jack," and John Madden's "Captain Corelli's Mandolin," among others.
Distinguished editor Michael Kahn, renowned as Steven Spielberg's editor, has received a total of six Academy Award nominations, winning three Best Film Editing Oscars® for "Saving Private Ryan," "Schindler's List," and "Raiders of the Lost Ark." He also received nominations for "Empire of the Sun," "Fatal Attraction" (shared with Peter E. Berger), and "Close Encounters of the Third Kind." Some of Mr. Kahn's other films include "Catch Me If You Can," "Minority Report," "Artificial Intelligence: AI," "Reindeer Games," "Amistad," "The Lost World: Jurassic Park," "Jurassic Park," "Hook," "Toy Soldiers," "Arachnophobia," "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade," "Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom," "Poltergeist," "The Color Purple," and "Eyes of Laura Mars."
Academy Award-winning composer Howard Shore received an Oscar® for Best Music, Original Score for "The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring." He also won this year's Grammy for Best Soundtrack Album from the film. Mr. Shore's other distinguished composing credits include the upcoming "The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King" and the 2002 release "The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers," as well as "Panic Room," "The Yards," "High Fidelity," "Analyze This," "eXistenZ," "That Thing You Do!" "Se7en," "Ed Wood," "The Client," "Philadelphia," "Mrs. Doubtfire," "A Kiss Before Dying," "The Silence of the Lambs," "Big," and "Videodrome," among others.
Renowned songwriter David Foster has been nominated three times for his songwriting contributions to the songs "The Prayer" in "Quest for Camelot," "I Have Nothing" in "The Bodyguard," and "Glory of Love" in "The Karate Kid, Part II." He also won a Golden Globe Award for "The Prayer" from "Quest for Camelot," and has received two other Golden Globe nominations for his songwriting. Mr. Foster's other feature film credits include "Carlito's Way," "All I Want for Christmas," "Pretty Woman," "One Good Cop," "If Looks Could Kill," "Stealing Home," "Three Men and a Baby," "The Secret of My Succe$s," "St. Elmo's Fire," "Summer Lovers," and "Night Shift." As a producer/songwriter, Mr. Foster is also a 14-time Grammy Award winner with 42 Grammy nominations.
Academy Award-winning costume designer Ann Roth won an Oscar® for her work on "The English Patient," and she received three other Oscar® nominations for her costume designing on "The Hours," "The Talented Mr. Ripley," and "Places in the Heart." Ms. Roth's prolific career includes approximately 90 feature films, which include the upcoming "Cold Mountain," as well as such films as "Signs," "Changing Lanes," "Finding Forrester," "The Out-of-Towners," "The Siege," "Primary Colors," "Guarding Tess," "Dave," "The Mambo Kings," "The Bonfire of the Vanities," "Postcards from the Edge," "Working Girl," "Biloxi Blues," "The Unbearable Lightness of Being," "Jagged Edge," "Silkwood," "Nine to Five," "Dressed to Kill," "Hair," "The Goodbye Girl," "The Day of the Locust," "The Valachi Papers," "Klute," and "Midnight Cowboy."
Three-time Academy Award-nominated production designer William J. Creber has received nominations for "The Greatest Story Ever Told," "The Poseidon Adventure," and "The Towering Inferno." His other film credits include "Without Limits," "Spy Hard," "Street Fighter," "Flight of the Navigator," "Twice in a Lifetime," "Hopscotch," "Islands in the Stream," "Justine," "Planet of the Apes," and "The Detective."
Casting director Deborah Aquila's body of work as an independent casting director includes such films as "The Core," "Hope Springs," "Laurel Canyon," "The Salton Sea," "Hart's War," "One Hour Photo," "The Majestic," "The Last Castle," "The Gift," "What Women Want," "The Shawshank Redemption," and "Sex, Lies and Videotape." Ms. Aquila also served as Senior Vice-President of Features Casting at Paramount Pictures for many years, and was responsible for the casting of such films as "Bless the Child," "Mission Impossible II," "Passion of Mind" "Double Jeopardy," "Primal Fear," "Kiss the Girls," "The Phantom," and "The Brady Bunch," among others.
The 2003 Annual Hollywood Film Festival® incorporates in its
activities the Hollywood Film Conference, Hollywood Film Screenings, and Hollywood Movie Awards.
Last year's honorees included: Steven Spielberg's "Minority Report," -- "Hollywood Movie of the Year Award" -- Jennifer Aniston and Tom Hanks received the "Hollywood Actress and Actor of the Year Awards" -- and the "Hollywood Breakthrough Awards" went to Naomi Watts and McG. Other Hollywood luminaries who were honored included MPAA President Jack Valenti, Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Jody Williams, actress Jodie Foster, director Martin Scorsese, screenwriter Robert Towne, producers Douglas Wick and Lucy Fisher, cinematographer Janusz Kaminski, editor Pietro Scalia, composer Marc Shaiman, songwriter Carole Bayer Sager, production designer Harold Michelson, and casting director Marcia Ross.
The Gala was truly an extraordinary Hollywood moment. Celebrities and Hollywood notables who attended the ceremony included First Lady of California Sharon Davis, European Union Commission Minister Counsel Willy Helin, as well as Miguel Arteta, Drew Barrymore, Warren Beatty, Billy Crystal, Kieran Culkin, Benicio Del Toro, Danny DeVito, Cameron Diaz, Leonardo DiCaprio, Colin Farrell, Harrison Ford, Daryl Hannah, Tyler Hoechlin, Ashton Kutcher, Ray Liotta, Lucy Liu, Garry Marshall, Matthew McConaughey, Emily Mortimer, Mike Myers, Jason Patric, Mark Rydell, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Gore Verbinski, and Estella Warren to name a few.
