HOLLYWOOD, CA -- May 18, 2001 -- Carlos de Abreu, Hollywood Film Festival founder, announces the "Hollywood Humanitarian Award" recipient for the 5th Annual Hollywood Film Festival and Hollywood Movie Awards.
"The 'Hollywood Humanitarian Award' is bestowed on an individual for his/her dedication to fighting injustices and creating social change for the improvement of human rights," de Abreu said.
This year the Hollywood Film Festival will be expanding its Documentary category by launching the Hollywood DOCUMENTARY Film Festival. Two consecutive days will be dedicated to showcasing over 20 documentaries from around the world.
During the festival the documentary titled "The Diplomat," which documents Mr. José Ramos Horta's 25 year struggle to free his country, East Timor, will be showcased. Mr. Horta received the Nobel Peace Prize Award in 1996 for his continuous work to achieve independence for his country and to make sure that the massacres of his people will no longer continue.
"It is crucial that we embrace documentarians and allow them to share with the public their voices as expressed in their works. Socially conscious filmmaking must be nurtured," said de Abreu.
At this time the Hollywood Film Festival Documentary Advisory Committee is comprised of Michael Donaldson (president, International Documentary Association), Udy Epstein (president, Seventh Art Releasing), Sydney Levine (owner, FilmFinders), Albert Maysles (documentarian), Sheila Nevins (executive vice-president, HBO), Fredel Pogodin (publicist), Bob Reid (senior vice-president, Discovery Channel), Steven Rothenberg (executive vice-president, Artisan Entertainment), Arnold Schwartzman (producer, Chair of the AMPAS Documentary Branch), and David W. Seevers (ABCNews Video Source).
The deadine for submissions to the Hollywood Film Festival was extended to May 30.
